The word vocation comes from a Latin word, which means “a call.” God lovingly calls us to friendship and union with Him.
This invitation is the universal call to holiness. Since each individual is created uniquely with different gift of grace, every one of us has a particular call from God:
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” -- Jeremiah 1:5.
And for those who are baptized Christian, we are called not only to walk in the path of holiness but also to participate in the work of salvation of Christ to build up God’s Kingdom for the whole world. This particular call from God requires a personal response. Mother Mary models for us her total trust and response to her vocation as the Mother of our Savior when she said:
“May it be done to me according to your word!” -- Luke 1:38
In a more specific Catholic term, the word vocation refers to the four ways of life that that one may choose in response to God’s call to holiness and to partake in Christ’s work of redemption:
“Every vocation, every path to which Christ calls us, ultimately leads to fulfillment and happiness, because it leads to God, to sharing in God’s own life.”
So what is God's call for you?
