Many very capable people find themselves in a quandary when they are injured, ill or challenged by an overwhelming situation. Often we depend on family, friends and co-workers during these times. But occasionally, they are not available. Unfortunately, this occurs more frequently among retirees, empty nesters and the chronically infirmed.
The Parish Social Ministry of St. Hyacinth hopes to alleviate these circumstances by creating a telephone network to check up on the at-risk seniors in our community. Not just members of the congregation, but anyone in and around Deer Park.
A phone call, once a week, just to let someone know they are not alone.
We know that you’re probably already checking up on loved ones and friends who need just a little friendly contact. We also know that you can’t always call yourself. This is why we’d like to create a network. When you can’t reach out – for whatever reasons – someone else can.
What does a network entail?
We ask that you keep a log, which we’ll provide. Just the name of the person called and the date and time of the call. We don’t need to know what you talked about.
We’re not asking you to do any more than call. It’s possible that the person you call needs more than just a call. We don’t want you become these folks’ chauffeur, or personal shopper, or counselor, or health-care provider, or handyman. It’s part of our parish’s pastoral plan to provide volunteer and robust senior services, as many other parishes do.
But we’re not there yet. However, if you hear someone has an urgent need, let us know and we’ll do what we can to help.
As Christians, as Catholics, as parishioners of St. Hyacinth, we are all called to serve – until God calls us home. Today, the Parish Social Ministry of St. Hyacinth wants to offer you two opportunities:
A chance to identify yourself – or someone you know – as someone who might benefit from a weekly call.
A chance to participate in the initial phase of renewed discipleship in our parish by making a simple phone call.
We know that many of you have served the parish for years – and some of you continue to. We ask that you consider committing to this simple but important service, and contribute your legacy to our next 50 years as a parish.
